The date of founding is unknown, but the shrine was formerly known as Tanaka Inari. According to legend, its origins trace back to when Genke, a monk from Mii-dera temple, discovered divine statues in the area; at that time, a white fox appeared and circled the site three times. During a drought in the sixth year of Genroku (1693 CE), rain fell after the poet Ho'i Kissho composed a prayer for rain, which helped spread the shrine's fame. It subsequently became revered as the guardian deity of the Mitsui family.
