The enshrined deity, Oogibitsuhiko-no-mikoto, was a prince who pacified the land of Kibi. Kibitsu Shrine was established during an imperial visit by Emperor Nintoku. This shrine is one of the 72 subsidiary shrines of Kibitsu Shrine and was enshrined as the tutelary deity of the western shore of Setao. It is believed that a shrine building was erected on this site during the reign of Emperor Shomu (726 CE).
