This temple is a successor to the Kokubunji established during the Nara period by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. It is presumed to have been abandoned at the end of the Heian period, but was revived during the Edo period by the Mori family, the feudal lords of Tsuyama. It was later rebuilt with the support of the Echizen Matsudaira family.
