In 1186 CE (Bunji 2), Miyanomoto Seizamono, a retainer of Taira no Kiyomori, enshrined Fudo Myo-o (the Wisdom King of Immovable Wisdom), the guardian deity of the Taira clan, following a divine revelation, and founded the temple as Shoho-in. Two of the Five Great Wisdom Kings, which were taken away during the burning of Mount Hiei and thus escaped destruction, have been enshrined here since 2012 CE (Heisei 24).
