The temple is said to have originated in 1409 CE when the monk Kakue placed an image of the Eleven-Faced Kannon in a rock cave. In 1611 CE, a Kannon hall was built at the base of the rock, but in 1873 CE, the main deity was transferred to Zofuku-ji at the foot of the mountain, and the temple was abandoned. It was subsequently revived in 1879 CE.
