Mitsudera

大阪市中央区心斎橋筋2丁目7−12

4.5(68)

A Shingon Buddhism (Mikura-ha) temple located in Chuo Ward, Osaka City, classified as a quasi-special head temple. It is affectionately known locally as 'Mittera-san.' In 2023, it was transformed into an integrated complex facility combining a temple, hotel, and commercial spaces.

History

Founded by the monk Gyoki during the relocation of the capital to Naniwa in the Nara period. It is said that in 744 CE (Tenpyo 16), Gyoki constructed the main hall by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. The main hall was rebuilt in 1808 CE (Bunka 5). In 1933, the current principal image was carved from a large camphor tree that was felled during the expansion works of Midosuji Street.
