The shrine originated during the reign of Emperor Chūai (the 11th emperor) when Princess Amaiwafune visited the area and planted sakaki trees and stretched sacred ropes (shimenawa). A shrine building was constructed during the reign of Emperor Kanmu. In the 3rd year of Eiroku (1560 CE), it was revered as a place of prayer for Hatanoya Hideharu. In the 1st year of Kanbun (1661 CE), the shrine buildings were rebuilt by Matsudaira Wakasa-no-kami Yasuharu. During the Meiji era, it was separated from Enkō-ji Temple, and in the 4th year of Shōwa (1929 CE), it was promoted to a prefectural shrine.
