History
Before the Nara period, Yamato-Totohi-Momoso-Hime washed ashore in this area and came to be worshipped as a deity of water virtue. Kobo Daishi (Kukai) dug and dedicated an Akai well (ritual water well) within the shrine grounds. Additionally, due to the visit of Fujiwara no Tadasuke, the shrine was given the title 'O-Mizushi' (Great Mizushi). In 1903 (Meiji 36), it was elevated to the rank of a prefectural shrine (KenchA). It is currently recognized as one of the twenty-four shrines listed in the Engishiki for Sanuki Province.
