In the first year of the Tenpyō era (729 CE), the monk Ganji established Mandai-ji as a shrine temple. During the Heian period, it served as a branch shrine of Ishizumi Hachiman Grand Shrine. In the Meiji era, the separation of Shinto and Buddhism led to its separation from Mandai-ji. It is currently ranked as a Prefectural Shrine (Fusha).
