The shrine's founding is said to date back to 869 CE (Sagan 11), when Goshu Tenno (Susano-o no Mikoto) was invited from Hirominami in Harima Province to quell an epidemic, and a branch of the deity's spirit was enshrined in a grove of yagura trees. Later, when the spirit of Goshu Tenno was enshrined in Yasaka to establish Gion Shrine, the residents of the Yagura area sent a mikoshi (portable shrine), which is considered the origin of the Gion Festival's kasa-hoko (umbrella and pole) floats. This historical connection led to the shrine being called Moto Gion Sha (Moto Gion Shrine). The current form of the shrine was established through restorations in 1874 CE (Meiji 7) and 1929 CE (Showa 4).
