According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 1184 CE (Jōei 3) by Fujiwara no Kunitoshi, a judge's deputy, and the Kabyō (a decorative stone pillar) was rebuilt in 1191 CE (Kenkyū 2) by Amabusa no Naotane, a steward of Amabusa. The shrine was reduced to ashes in a fire caused by soldiers in June 1223 CE (Kangen 5), and the enshrined deities were transferred to the current location in December 1870 CE (Meiji 3).
