According to tradition, the Mura-koku clan founded the shrine during the Asuka period, enshrining Ama-no-Hibaka-no-Mikoto and Mikoshi-Kori-Oba-no-Mikoto. Later, Mura-koku Shigamaro added Mura-koku Oyi to the enshrinements, and around 900 CE, the Hakusan Gongen (White Mountain Gongen) was also enshrined. The Mura-koku-za was completed during the Meiji era as a venue for dedicated Kabuki performances.
