The temple's origins are traditionally traced to a grass hut established by Ippen in 1261 CE (Kōchō 1). However, it is actually believed to have originated when Aja Shinkyo opened a nembutsu dojo in 1303 CE (Kagen 1). The temple declined temporarily following the fall of the Kamakura shogunate but regained prominence during the Sengoku period under the protection of the Hojo clan. In 1918 CE (Taisho 7), Yamazaki Ben'ei was appointed as the abbot and became the de facto founder of the temple's revival.
