This Tenda sect temple is traditionally said to have been founded in 850 CE (Kajo 3) by Ennin. The temple declined after suffering war damage during the Sengoku period, but it received protection from the Sendai Domain during the Edo period. The current main hall and mountain gate were established during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
