History
This temple is the successor to the Kokubunji (Provincial Temple) established by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. It was destroyed by fire during the Battle of Bunbai Kawara in 1333 CE (Genkō 3) but the Medicine Hall was rebuilt in 1335 CE (Kenmu 2) by Nitta Yoshitsune. The current structures were rebuilt during the Bōryaku era (1751–1764).
