The exact date of its founding is unknown. It is said that in ancient times, when Prince Nishino and Prince Shinobe of Kawashima and Shinobe were fleeing the Jinshin War, they stayed in this riverside area and invited the deity to be enshrined here. It has also been called a Hachiman Shrine. In the 15th year of the Bunka era (1818 CE), Prince Sadakatsu of the Fushimi Imperial House performed worship on its behalf. In the 14th year of the Meiji era (1881 CE), Prince Chihito of the Arisugawa Imperial House, who held the rank of First Class, contributed the calligraphy for the shrine's name.
