This is a historic temple of the Nichiren sect, founded in 1358 CE (Eiwa 4) by Nichimitsu at the residence of Ono Myogaku. In 1366 CE (Kansei 7), it merged with the nearby Honkakuji temple and developed as a central temple for the Fushu Fushi doctrine (the principle of not accepting alms or offerings). It later underwent relocation by order of Ashikaga Yoshinao, evacuation due to the Tenbun Hoke Rebellion, and reconstruction before moving to its current location. The temple was completely destroyed by the Tenmei Great Fire but was subsequently rebuilt. It is now known as one of the 'Three Gokuzan of Ryoga' (a group of three temples associated with the Ryoga area).
