The founding date is unknown, but it was originally a Shingon sect temple named Honkoji. In 1294 CE (Eiun 2), it was converted to the Nichiren sect by Nichizo. In 1535 CE (Bunmei 4), it was rebuilt as Myogyoji by the monk Nichisei. It is said that in 1610 CE (Keicho 15), the warrior Kato Kiyomasa used leftover materials from the construction of Nagoya Castle to relocate and rebuild the temple at his birthplace.
