History
It is said to have been founded in 1253 CE (Kencho 5) by Nichiren at the site of his thatched hut in Matsubagatani. The de facto founding abbot was Nichien, the fifth-generation successor to Nichiren. Nichien built the main hall and other structures to honor Nichiren and to pray for the soul of his father, Prince Moriyoshi. He named the temple Ryogozan Myohoji (Ryogozan Myoho-ji) after his childhood name. During the Edo period, it received the patronage of Tokugawa Ienari and the Hosokawa family. The current main hall was built by the Hosokawa family in the Bunsei era (1818-1830).
