Originally a Shingon sect nunnery, the temple converted to the Nichiren sect between 1615 and 1624 CE (Genwa era) by the monk Nichikei, who did so to honor the memory of his mother, Nichien Hone. The mountain name was set as Nichienzan in reference to Nichien Hone, and the temple name was established as Myohoji. It was elevated to the status of a head temple (yusho jiin) in 1952 CE (Shōwa 27).
