Myokenji
京都市上京区妙顕寺前町514
Myokenji is the head temple of the Nichiren sect. Its mountain name is Gokuzan, and its court name is Ryuge-in. It is also known by the alternate names "Shikai Shoudou" and "Shijo Monryu."
History
Established in 1321 CE (Genko 1) when Nichizo received temple lands from Emperor Go-Daigo, Myokenji was the first full-scale Nichiren sect temple in Kyoto. In 1334 CE (Kenmu 1), it became an imperial temple and was officially recognized as a sect. After suffering repeated destruction, including damage from followers of Mount Hiei and fires during the Tenmon Hokke War, the temple was relocated to its current site by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
