Founded in 1637 CE (Kan'ei 14), the temple was established by Ichiyanagi Naoshige, the lord of Iyo Saijō Domain, who invited Nichi-e of Hōsei-in as the founding monk to enshrine the spirits of his mother and his wife. Later, when Matsudaira Yoritsune became the domain lord, the temple also served as the family temple for the Matsudaira clan. It is known as the 'Temple of Women's Attainment of Buddhahood' due to the anecdote of Daidai Nyōrō Myōzen of Jisei-in.
