Founded in 1637 CE (Kan'ei 14) by Iryu Naoshige, the lord of the Iyo Saijo domain, to honor the souls of his mother and concubine. In 1670 CE (Kanbun 10), when Matsudaira Yoritsune became the domain lord, the temple also became the family temple of the Matsudaira clan.
