The temple's origins are said to date back to the Tensho period, when a dojo was established for negotiations between Oda Nobunaga and the Ise Grand Shrine during the Siege of Ishiyama. In 1602 (Keicho 7), it was reorganized as Mugai Chizan Daito-ji with Kyoju as the founding abbot. In 1606 (Keicho 11), the temple moved to its current location. In 1639 (Kan'ei 16), SENSEI was appointed as the abbot, and with the support of the Himeji Domain, structures from Fushimi Castle were transferred to the temple, leading to the development of its current architectural landscape.
