History

In 1119 CE (Enkyu 1), Minamoto no Yoritomo enshrined a branch deity brought from Ishizumi Hachiman-gu in Kyoto. It was also known as Sakata Hachiman-gu (Sakata Hachiman Shrine) and received deep reverence from the imperial family and military commanders. It is said that its shrine lands and buildings were once extremely grand. The shrine was destroyed by fire during the Genki and Tensho periods, but was rebuilt with donations from Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The main hall (honden) was rebuilt in 1889 CE (Meiji 22).
