According to tradition, in 1406 CE (Oei 13), residents of Nagahama received a divine message in a dream and discovered a small shrine at the coast, leading to its establishment through donations from Otomo Chiyoyuki. After suffering damage from the tsunami of the Keicho Higo Earthquake and undergoing multiple relocations, the shrine was moved to its current site in 1681 CE (Enpo 9). In 1913 CE (Taisho 2), Matsue Tenmangu, which enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, was merged into the shrine.
