History
The temple was founded in 1630 CE (Kan'ei 7) by Nichikan, the 13th head of Shion-ji, who is said to have been the son of Ishida Mitsunari. It was relocated to its current site in 1669 CE (Kanbun 9). In 1771, Nichigen transferred the Shion Myoken image from Shion-ji to this temple. Following the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism edict at the beginning of the Meiji era, the temple grounds were divided into the temple and Shion Shrine.

Famous for hosting the 'Ueno Market' (Year of the Rooster Market) since the Edo period, the area is bustling with stalls during the third Rooster period of the year. Located next to Shion Shrine, it can be visited in a very quiet atmosphere depending on the time of year. Goshuin (shrine stamps) featuring cut-paper art and other offerings such as kumade (lucky rakes) are also available.
