History
It is traditionally said to have been founded in 1185 CE (Bunji 1) by Toki Mitsuyuki. After being destroyed by fire during a war, it was re-established at its current location in 1659 CE (Manji 1) when Kinrei Sogyu invited Unkyo Kiyo to serve as the founding abbot. In the late Edo period, the tenth abbot, Shunyo Teisetsu, changed the mountain name to Ginkaku-zan.
