The founding of this shrine is attributed to the establishment of the Kibino-Katahama Shrine in the Kibi Province, which served as one of the stops along the route taken by Amaterasu Omikami after departing from the Imperial Palace and before arriving at Ise. The shrine was founded 40 years prior to the establishment of the Naiku (Inner Shrine) of Ise Jingu. In 1913 (Taisho 2), the nearby Nonomiya Shrine and Hiyoshi Shrine were merged into this shrine.
