Nakagenji Temple (Mejitsuchi Dazaibara)
京都市東山区祇園町南側585
A Jodo-shu (Pure Land) temple known for its Meiyami Dazaibara (Eye-Healing Jizo) faith, which is said to be efficacious for eye diseases. It is also the 16th station of the Ryojo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
History
It is said that in the second year of the Anki era (1146 CE), the Buddhist sculptor Jōchō created a 16-shaku (approximately 5.8 meters) statue of Jizo Bodhisattva, enshrining a Jizo statue attributed to Prince Shōtoku within its womb. He then became the founding abbot. During a flood in the Kamakura period, prayers for the rain to stop were offered to this Jizo, and the rain ceased, leading to the temple being called 'Ame-yami Dazaibara' (Rain-Stopping Jizo). Later, it also came to be known as 'Meiyami Dazaibara' (Eye-Healing Jizo). In the 13th year of the Tenshō era (1585 CE), the temple grounds were relocated to their current site.
