In 1171 CE (Jōan 1), Fujiwara no Hidehira, the governor of Mutsu Province, enshrined a branch spirit of Kamo Ōkami (the Great Deity of Kamo) at a Raijinsha (Thunder God Shrine) to pray for a bountiful harvest of the five grains. In 1231 CE (Bunji 4), a flood carried the shrine to the village of Yanagino, where it came to be revered as the local Ujigami. In 1909 CE (Meiji 42), surrounding village shrines were merged into this site, and it was renamed Nakata Mura Shrine. In 1910 CE (Meiji 43), the shrine was relocated to its current location for the convenience of worshippers. In 1997 CE (Heisei 9), the shrine name was changed to Nakata Shrine.
