Nankobou

日本、〒794-0026 愛媛県今治市別宮町3丁目1

4.2(462)

Also known as Kongouin on Mount Bekku, this is a temple of the Myoumon-ha branch of Shingon Buddhism and the 55th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Its principal image, Daitsu Chishou Nyorai (Great Wisdom and Victory Tathagata), is unique among the temples on this pilgrimage route.

History

Founded during the reign of Empress Suiko as a place of Buddhist practice on Oshima Island, it was later relocated to serve as the head temple of Bekku. The temple was destroyed by fire during the campaigns of Chosokabe Motochika but was later rebuilt by the Nankobou section during the era of Tokugawa Takatora. In the Meiji era, it separated from Bekku to inherit the status of a pilgrimage station and now operates as a branch temple of the Myoumon-ha branch of Shingon Buddhism.

What visitors say

Located in the center of Imabari City, the temple grounds are easily accessible from a mountain gate facing the national highway and feature a spacious parking lot. The mountain gate is distinguished by statues of the Four Heavenly Kings positioned in the four cardinal directions, notable for their imposing expressions. A highlight of the main hall is the three-dimensional mandala of the Twelve Divine Generals. Goshuin (temple seal stamps) can be obtained at the scripture registration office on the east side.
