History
The 16th head of the Shimotsuke Utsunomiya clan, Utsunomiya Masatsuna, intended to found the temple to mourn Hoga Naritaka. However, due to Masatsuna's death in battle, his successor, the 17th head Utsunomiya Naritsuna, continued the project and established the temple in 1486 CE (Bunmei 18). Originally located in Nakagawara, Utsunomiya, the temple fell into disrepair after the Utsunomiya clan was stripped of their domain. It was relocated to its current site and revived during the Genroku era.
