According to tradition, the temple was founded in 705 CE (Keiun 2) by Jōe. In the early Heian period, Enchin entered the temple and converted it to the Tendai sect, but it was later converted to the Jodo-shu sect during the Eiroku period (1558–1570 CE). The temple is said to house one of six Jizō Bosatsu statues created when Ono no Takamochi was revived.
