Legend holds that the shrine originated when Empress Jingu stayed overnight at this location on her return journey from the conquest of the Three Kingdoms of Korea and enshrined Niho-tsu-hime-no-kami. In the first year of the Ninna era (895 CE), the Usuhachiman-gu shrine was invited here, and it came to be called Masu-Hachiman-gu. During the atomic bombing in the 20th year of the Showa era (1945 CE), the shrine buildings remained standing without collapsing and were used to provide relief to survivors.
