The shrine's origins date back to the Kuan era when Ando Morinaga enshrined Kumano Gongen. Later, Hachiman Daijin, the tutelary deity of the Hatakeyama clan, was added to the enshrinement. In 1643 CE (Kan'ei 20), Taniwa Mitsushige relocated the shrine to its current site and opened it to the domain's residents as the chief guardian shrine (sochinju) of the Nihonmatsu Domain. The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1806 CE (Bunka 3).
