Protected by the imperial family and nobility, it served as the leading temple of the Monzeki (imperial monasteries) and oversaw various Buddhist sects. After the Meiji Restoration, when imperial family members no longer served as abbots, it came to be known as the 'Old Jishu Imperial Villa.'
