Preparations to enshrine Nogi Maresuke and his wife Shizuko, who died by suicide on the day of Emperor Meiji's grand funeral, began in 1913 (Taisho 2) under the Chuo Nogi-kai (Central Nogi Association). The settlement ceremony (Chinza-sai) was held in 1923 (Taisho 12). The shrine buildings were destroyed by fire during the Great Air Raid, but were rebuilt in 1962 through the dedication of devotees.
