Nohokuji Tsukigae Kaiden
神戸市兵庫区北逆瀬川町1
Commonly known as the Nohoku Kokugo Mitsuji (Nohoku National Protection Esoteric Temple) on Mount Hoju, this is a Tendaishu temple also referred to as Japan's first site for spiritual guidance. It is famous for the 'Hyogo Daibutsu' (Great Buddha of Hyogo), which is counted as one of the three great Buddhas in Japan.
History
According to tradition, the temple was founded in 805 CE (Enryaku 24) when Saicho landed and preached the benefits of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), installing a statue he had personally crafted. It has a history associated with the retirement and burial of the remains of Taira no Kiyomori, and served as a prayer temple for the Taira clan. During the Edo period, it was the residence of a member of the Seirien-in temple in Kyoto. Despite repeated destruction by war fires and earthquakes, it has been repeatedly rebuilt to reach its present state.
