Founded during the Genwa era as a branch of Myōren-ji in Kyoto, it was originally established in Nishi-Kubo. It was later relocated to Sakanodacho, Azabu, but was destroyed by fire in 1721 CE (Kyōhō 6). It was destroyed again during the Tokyo air raids at the end of the Pacific War. It is now located at its current site.
