The shrine's origins date back to 1334, when the protective deity of Todaiji Temple, Teiouyama Hachimangu, was enshrined here. In 1451, Zen priest Joun Zai moved the enshrinement, designating it as the head shrine for Ogaki Town and the surrounding eighteen villages. In 1648, Toda Katsuriki, the lord of the Ogaki Domain, rebuilt and renovated the shrine; contributions from the eighteen villages under the castle town and ten market towns at that time are considered the origin of the major festival. The shrine buildings were destroyed in an air raid in 1945, but the main hall and worship hall were reconstructed between 1951 and 1954.
