Its predecessor is said to have been founded in 704 CE (Denkei 1) as Sugihara-gu (Sugihara Shrine). Around 871 CE (Seikan 13), the enshrined deities were transferred to the current Moto-gu (Head Shrine), and in 1624 CE (Genna 10), they were moved to the present location. In 1193 CE (Kenkyu 4), it is said that Ohtomo Yoshinao revised the worship rituals to align with those of Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu (Tsurugaoka Hachiman Grand Shrine).
