In 959 CE (Tentoku 3), Yamada Nagayasu enshrined the deity of Sumiyoshi Taisha (Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine), an official shrine in Chōshū Province, at this site to establish the shrine. In 1187 CE (Bunji 3), by order of Minamoto no Yoritomo, it was selected as the head shrine of the twelve districts of Northern Musashi. During the Edo period, it received a Goshuin (a shrine's calligraphic seal stamp) from Tokugawa Iemitsu. After the Meiji Restoration, it was designated a village shrine (mura-sha) and was promoted to a prefectural shrine (kyō-sha) in 1926 CE (Taishō 15).
