History

The shrine's origins are said to trace back to 727 CE (Shoki 4), when Sarutahiko Oomi (the Great God Sarutahiko) was invited to be enshrined beside a Shinto shrine. It came to be known as Ono Minato Shrine as the guardian deity of the harbor in Ono Village. Following a fire that destroyed the shrine buildings in 1252 CE (Kencho 4) during the reign of Emperor Go-Fukakusa, the enshrined deity was transferred to the current location. The shrine received the deep reverence of the Kaga Domain lords and was ranked as the foremost of the Five Shrines of the Kaga Domain. It was designated a Prefectural Shrine in 1885 CE (Meiji 18) and a Special Table Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines in 1966 CE (Shōwa 41).
