The temple was founded in 1330 by the Zen master Enko Daisho Soshi Messo Soko Dai-ojō. In 1648, Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Edo shogunate, granted the temple a land stipend of seven koku. During the early Meiji period, due to the Haibutsu Kishaku (the destruction of Buddhism and Shinto) movement, the temple accepted some parishioners from the nearby Shingon sect temple, Seijoin.
