The shrine is believed to have been founded in 673 CE (Hakuhō 2) when the first head priest, Kogobe no Sukune Sawagunao, relocated the enshrined deity to Yumoto Sansako. It was later moved to Kanoyama in 1340 CE (Kiryō 3) and to its current location in 1768 CE (Meiwa 5). Since ancient times, the Sawago family has inherited the position of head priest through hereditary succession.
