The shrine's origins date back to 969 CE (Anwa 2), when the abbot of Jogyo Sanmai Temple invited a branch spirit from Kashima Jingu (Kashima Grand Shrine) in Hitachi Province. During the Meiji era, following the Order for the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the shrine was separated from Raiogo-in within the same grounds and designated as the village shrine and chief guardian shrine of Ooi Village. The current shrine buildings were completed in 1931.
