The shrine's origins date back to 727 CE (Jinki 4), when Sana from Mutsu Province reportedly found Sarutahiko Okami during a voyage and established a small shrine next to the Shinmei Shrine at Yarihayashi on Masago Hill in Ono Village. It is listed as a Shikinaisha (officially registered shrine) in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (Register of Shrine Names in the Engishiki codex). During the Sengoku period, it was revived by Maeda Toshiie. From 1604 CE (Keicho 9), Maeda Toshinaga began the tradition of offering Kagura Noh performances. Following a fire in 1252 CE (Kencho 4), the shrine was relocated to its current site in Terachuo-cho. In 1639 CE (Kan'ei 16), Maeda Tsunamune constructed the current shrine buildings.
