History
It is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, and is an ancient temple believed to have been established during the Nara period. In 811 CE (Kōnin 2), Kukai was appointed as the head priest (bettō) and carried out repairs and construction to pacify the vengeful spirit of Prince Saera. During the Genroku era, the temple received donations from Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and was restored as a Shingon Buddhist prayer temple.
