Traditionally said to have been founded by Emperor Shomu. From the Nara period through the early Heian period, it was a major temple on par with Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji. It is believed that the Kumagyo Seisha (Bear-Condensed Hermitage) built by Prince Shotoku became an official temple, undergoing repeated relocations and name changes. It declined after the Heian period, and following a fire in the first year of Kanen (1019 CE) that destroyed its main halls and pagodas, its scale was reduced.
